Disease Areas
FA is a genetic, debilitating and life-shortening neurodegenerative disease, affecting approximately 15,000 individuals globally.1 Early symptoms of FA, such as progressive loss of coordination, muscle weakness and fatigue, typically appear in children and can overlap with other diseases.2 Many people living with FA use walking aids and will often need to use a wheelchair within 10 to 15 years after symptom onset.3 Other symptoms of FA include vision impairment, hearing loss, slurred speech, aggressive scoliosis, diabetes mellitus, and serious heart conditions.2
Biogen acquired Reata Pharmaceuticals in September 2023, and we are proud to continue building on the outstanding work they have done to bring a treatment option to people living with FA. We continue to leverage our rare disease expertise and capabilities to potentially help bring treatments to more people living with this devastating disease.
Our research focuses on addressing the diverse needs of individuals across all age groups affected by this challenging disease. We aim to broaden possibilities and create meaningful advancements in care. Through our commitment to innovation, we strive to make a lasting impact on the FA community today and for generations to come.
Elizabeth is a student pursuing cell and molecular biology at the University of Pennsylvania and living with Friedreich ataxia. She shares her story of learning to accept her present without becoming overwhelmed by future possibilities, saying, “we have a condition, but we're just like anyone else.” Her pursuit for understanding the science behind the debilitating neurological condition to empower others keeps her motivated on her path forward.
Biogen is conducting clinical trials in FA.
Deciding to participate in a clinical trial requires careful consideration. In most cases, the drugs investigated or uses in clinical trials are not yet approved by regulatory agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The benefits and risks of taking the drug are not completely known. By volunteering for a clinical trial, you are helping the medical community determine whether new treatments are safe and effective.
