For Neil, a Senior Manufacturing Specialist II in Manufacturing Technical Operations (MTO) at Biogen’s Solothurn, Switzerland site, curiosity and a passion for problem-solving have shaped a career that spans countries, disciplines, and nearly eight years at Biogen.
Originally from County Wexford, Ireland, Neil holds a bachelor's degree in microbiology from University College Dublin, a master's degree in biotechnology from Imperial College London, and a second Master’s in Biopharmaceutical Engineering from University College Dublin. He began his career in Cork, Ireland, at a rare disease company, where he contributed to the startup of a new facility and later supported the technology transfer for a new product introduction.
“I learned a lot in those early years,” he says. “My first role was hands-on with the process equipment, testing it and getting it ready for production.” From there, he joined the New Product Introduction team, partnering with process development to scale a clinical-stage product from the lab into full-scale manufacturing. “That experience really shaped how I think about tech transfer, providing a foundation I've leaned on in every role since.”
That curiosity eventually led him to Biogen. “I heard about a highly automated, paperless greenfield facility starting here in Solothurn,” Neil explains. He joined in late 2018 as a contractor to support initial site commissioning, drawn not only to the technical challenge but also to the lifestyle. “Switzerland is in the heart of Europe, it’s a mecca for the outdoors, and it’s easy to get around. I knew people who had moved here and loved it, so I was excited to do the same.”
Since then, Neil’s role has evolved alongside the site. After several years gaining experience across commissioning, process engineering, validation, and project engineering, he moved into MTO. The MTO team connects shopfloor manufacturing operations with the technical and operational teams that support them behind the scenes, such as engineering, automation, and quality. “In my role, I work to understand how we can make the process work as best as possible for the products we’re making and for the manufacturing team on the floor,” he says. “It’s a two-way street; we get direct feedback from the floor and work with multiple teams to resolve issues and keep operations running smoothly.”
Career growth has been a constant for him at Biogen. In MTO, Neil initially focused on downstream operations and supported multiple tech transfers. More recently, he served as a Site Operations Lead for an important Process Performance Qualification (PPQ) campaign, which is the final validation to provide documented evidence that the process is capable of consistent, reproducible commercial-scale manufacturing. “There are always opportunities to take on extra responsibilities or challenge yourself,” he says. “It’s a big, complex site, so there’s always room to learn more.” He’s now expanding his expertise further by moving into upstream operations.
What motivates Neil most is the people and culture. “A lot of the teams I work with are very pragmatic and solution-oriented,” he shares. “It’s always about what’s best for the product, the site, and ultimately the patient.”
That mindset extends beyond work. When Neil and his wife, who also works at Biogen in Quality Control, welcomed their son, Biogen’s parental leave benefits made a meaningful difference. “Having that extra time really helped us focus on our son, especially since our extended family is back in Ireland. I really appreciated that.”
Outside of work, Neil is an avid marathon runner, with a goal of completing all the world’s major marathons. He's completed four so far, with London and Tokyo still to go, and Sydney recently added to the list, so he's keen to finish them before any more get added. He took up snowboarding when he moved to Switzerland and spends weekends hiking in the local mountains with his wife, their dachshund, Frank, and their growing family.
For jobseekers considering Biogen, Neil’s advice is clear: “Be a self-starter, be accountable, and be good at communicating problems along with your proposed solutions.” He adds, “In MTO, no day is the same. If you enjoy solving problems and taking ideas to real-world outcomes, you can learn so much here.”
